What state polytechnics are
State polytechnics are NBTE-accredited tertiary institutions owned and funded by individual state governments in Nigeria. They award National Diploma (ND, 2 years) and Higher National Diploma (HND, 2 additional years after ND), with mandatory 1-year industrial training (SIWES) between the two awards. Curriculum, accreditation review, and graduate-eligibility rules sit under the same NBTE oversight as federal polytechnics — the awards from a state polytechnic are equivalent to those from a federal polytechnic for purposes of professional registration, employment and Direct Entry into university.
The differentiator is funding and reach. State polytechnics are funded by state government budgets rather than federal allocations, which means their fees, infrastructure quality, calendar reliability and programme breadth vary substantially by state. A well-funded state polytechnic (Lagos, Rivers, Delta in some years) approaches federal-polytechnic quality; a poorly-funded one may struggle with strike disruptions and limited course offerings.
Major state polytechnics by region
Most Nigerian states operate at least one polytechnic; several states operate multiple. Major institutions by region:
- South-West: Lagos State Polytechnic (now LASUSTECH, university), The Polytechnic Ibadan (Oyo), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta (Ogun), Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade (Ogun), Osun State Polytechnic Iree, Ondo State Polytechnic Owo.
- South-South: Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic Bori (Rivers), Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku and Ozoro and Otefe-Oghara (three Delta polytechnics), Edo State Polytechnic Usen, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Ikot Osurua, Bayelsa State Polytechnic Aleibiri.
- South-East: Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo, Abia State Polytechnic Aba, Anambra State Polytechnic Mgbakwu, Akanu Ibiam State Polytechnic Abakaliki (Ebonyi), Enugu State Polytechnic Iwollo.
- North-Central: Plateau State Polytechnic Barkin Ladi, Nasarawa State Polytechnic Lafia, Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja, Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin, Benue State Polytechnic Ugbokolo, Niger State Polytechnic Zungeru.
- North-West: Kano State Polytechnic, Kaduna Polytechnic (federal, but mentioned), Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Jigawa State Polytechnic Dutse, Kebbi State Polytechnic Dakingari, Sokoto State Polytechnic.
- North-East: Adamawa State Polytechnic Yola, Taraba State Polytechnic Suntai, Gombe State Polytechnic Bajoga, Yobe State Polytechnic Geidam, Borno State Polytechnic Maiduguri.
Fees and cost
State polytechnic fees vary by state. Indicative bands for the most recent admission cycle:
- Lower-fee states (typically those with strong state allocations or low-cost-of-living regions): ₦40,000–₦80,000 per session.
- Mid-fee states (Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Ogun, Akwa Ibom and similar): ₦80,000–₦200,000 per session.
- Acceptance fees (one-off, paid on admission): typically ₦20,000–₦50,000.
- Accommodation (on-campus hostels where available): ₦20,000–₦60,000 per session.
- Departmental and faculty levies (paid each session): ₦10,000–₦30,000.
Total cost of a state polytechnic ND + HND programme (5 years end to end) typically runs ₦500,000–₦1,500,000 — well below the federal-university total and far below private polytechnics or universities.
Admission
State polytechnic admission flows through JAMB UTME on the same calendar as universities and federal polytechnics. The pattern:
- Register for JAMB UTME and choose a state polytechnic among your four institutional choices.
- Meet the institutional cut-off. State polytechnic cut-offs typically range 100–150, lower than university cut-offs (140–230+).
- Register for the polytechnic\'s Post-UTME screening. Each polytechnic publishes its own screening dates and format.
- Accept admission on JAMB CAPS if offered.
- Pay acceptance fee, register course load, attend matriculation.
Why choose a state polytechnic
- Lower cost than universities or private polytechnics — total programme cost is typically a third to a quarter of equivalent private institutions.
- Faster employment timeline. ND alone (2 years + 1 SIWES year) gets you into technician-level roles quickly. ND-stop is a common Nigerian career strategy.
- HND conversion path to BSc. Complete HND, then pursue a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and MSc to obtain university-equivalent qualifications.
- Indigene priority at home-state polytechnic. Several state polytechnics give admission priority to indigenes of the state.
- Practical, applied focus. State polytechnic curricula emphasise practical skills and industry alignment more than universities.
What to watch out for
- Calendar reliability varies. State polytechnics in financially-stressed states may experience semester delays due to staff salary issues.
- Accreditation status drift. Verify the specific programme is currently NBTE-accredited before committing fees. The NBTE bulletin publishes accreditation changes quarterly.
- Hostel availability. Several state polytechnics do not run sufficient on-campus hostels for all students. Budget for off-campus accommodation from year 2.
