How tertiary admission in Nigeria actually works
Admission into every NUC-accredited university, NBTE-accredited polytechnic and NCCE-accredited college of education in Nigeria flows through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). JAMB owns the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) — the single dashboard where every offer must be accepted or rejected. Whether you come through the UTME, Direct Entry, or an institution's pre-degree programme, your admission only becomes binding once CAPS reflects it.
The standard sequence is straightforward: register with JAMB, sit the UTME, meet the institutional cut-off, register for the school's Post-UTME screening, score competitively on aggregate, get listed, then accept on CAPS. Where candidates lose ground is at the edges — choosing the wrong subject combination, missing a screening deadline, or failing to act on CAPS once a list drops. Each of those mistakes costs a full admission cycle.
The seven admission pathways, briefly
Every Nigerian admission seeker uses one (or sometimes a combination) of these routes:
- JAMB UTME — the universal route into 100 level. Sit the UTME, score above the institutional cut-off, pass Post-UTME, get admitted.
- Direct Entry (DE) — for candidates holding A-Level, ND, NCE, HND, IJMB or JUPEB credentials. You enter 200 level directly and skip 100 level entirely.
- IJMB — a 9-month, Ahmadu Bello University–coordinated A-Level equivalent accepted for DE by most federal universities.
- JUPEB — the University of Lagos–coordinated A-Level alternative accepted by 60+ universities for DE.
- Pre-degree / Foundation — an institution-run remedial year. Pass internally, then enter 100 level the next session.
- Part-time programmes — evening and weekend study leading to the same NUC/NBTE certificate, usually one or two sessions longer than full-time.
- Distance Learning — the National Open University (NOUN) and Distance Learning Institutes at UI, UNILAG, ABU and others. Online plus periodic on-site facilitation.

The admission timeline you should plan around
The Nigerian admission calendar repeats every year with predictable windows. Memorising it puts you ahead of 70% of applicants who scramble at the last minute.
- January – March: JAMB UTME registration opens. CBT centres book up fast in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and major university towns. Register in the first three weeks.
- April – May: UTME exams hold. Results are released within 48 hours per batch.
- June – August: Post-UTME screenings open. Each institution publishes its own dates — track them on our Post-UTME tracker.
- August – October: First and merit admission lists begin to release. Federal universities typically lead; private universities run rolling admissions.
- October – February: Supplementary and second-batch lists. CAPS remains active for new offers throughout this window.
- Resumption: 100 level resumption is usually January or February at federal universities, often earlier at private institutions.
Mistakes that cost admission
Most rejected applicants meet the JAMB cut-off. They lose admission to one of five preventable mistakes:
- Wrong subject combination. JAMB rejects you automatically if your four UTME subjects do not match your course requirement. Confirm yours with our subject combination checker before payment.
- Wrong institution choice on JAMB. You can only be admitted to a school you actually selected. Switching first choice during the change-of-course window is allowed for a small fee — use it if your score suggests a different tier.
- Skipping Post-UTME registration. JAMB clears you for UTME; the institution clears you for admission. A 200 UTME score with no Post-UTME registration equals no admission.
- Ignoring CAPS. Every offer must be accepted on CAPS within the window. Schools have revoked admissions because candidates never logged in.
- Banking on "facilitators". No JAMB officer, university staff member or middleman can "fix" admission. Every confirmed admission scam in 2025 ended with the candidate losing the money and the slot.
How to maximise your admission chances
Beyond avoiding mistakes, three actions disproportionately raise admission odds.
First, calibrate your school choice against your realistic JAMB score band. A 240 UTME candidate applying for Medicine at the University of Lagos faces a far lower probability than the same candidate applying for Medicine at a less competitive federal university. Second, treat Post-UTME like a second exam, not a formality. Most schools weight Post-UTME at 50% of your aggregate. A weak Post-UTME pulls a strong UTME down by 20 to 30 points on the merit list. We publish the format, past questions and aggregate formula for every institution.
Third, keep a B-list and a C-list institution active. Pay the change-of-institution fee if your scores trend lower than your A-list. The fee is well below what you lose by sitting out an entire admission cycle.
