Why subject combination matters

Every JAMB UTME candidate writes four subjects: English Language (compulsory) plus three subjects relevant to the target course. The three subjects must exactly match the combination JAMB publishes for that course at the candidate\'s target institution. A mismatch — even by one subject — means automatic rejection at JAMB processing, regardless of the UTME score, Post-UTME score or aggregate.

The mismatch problem is systemic. Subject combinations vary across institutions for the same course — Computer Science at one university may require English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; at another university the same course requires English, Mathematics, Physics and Further Mathematics. A candidate registering the first combination cannot be admitted to the second institution\'s Computer Science programme, even with overwhelmingly strong scores.

How the checker works

  1. Enter your four registered UTME subjects (or the subjects you are considering for registration).
  2. Select your target course from the dropdown.
  3. Select your target institution(s) — one specific institution or scan across all NUC-accredited Nigerian universities offering the course.
  4. The checker returns: match status (full match, partial match, or no match), the institution-specific required combination, and the change-of-subjects path if a mismatch exists.

The checker uses the JAMB Brochure data — the authoritative source of course-institution-combination requirements — refreshed each admission cycle.

Common subject combination mismatches

The patterns that cause most rejections:

  • Pharmacy without Physics. Pharmacy requires English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics. Many candidates register Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics assuming Pharmacy follows the same pattern as Nursing — but Pharmacy explicitly requires Physics.
  • Engineering with Biology instead of Further Mathematics. Several federal universities (UNILAG, OAU, FUTA) reject Biology as the fourth subject for Engineering and require Further Mathematics, Chemistry or Geography depending on institution.
  • Medicine without Mathematics. Medicine requires English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics — all five. Candidates substituting Further Mathematics for Mathematics are sometimes accepted; substituting Geography for Mathematics is universally rejected.
  • Law with the wrong social-science combination. Law requires English, Literature in English plus two of Government, History, CRK, IRK, or Economics. Substituting Mathematics or a science subject for Literature in English causes rejection at most universities.
  • Computer Science with Geography. Some federal universities accept Geography as the fourth subject for Computer Science; others explicitly reject it and require Further Mathematics. Verify the specific institution before registration.
  • Architecture without Fine Art / Technical Drawing. Several universities require Fine Art or Technical Drawing at SSCE for Architecture admission, in addition to the four UTME subjects. The checker flags this as an O\'Level requirement.

What to do if you have a mismatch

JAMB opens a Change of Subjects (and Change of Course) window each admission cycle, typically after UTME results are released. The process:

  1. Confirm the mismatch on this checker and identify the correct combination for your target course-institution.
  2. Log into the JAMB e-Facility portal at efacility.jamb.gov.ng.
  3. Navigate to "Change of Subjects" or "Change of Course" on your dashboard.
  4. Select the corrected combination or alternative course.
  5. Pay the change fee via Remita (currently ₦2,500–₦4,000).
  6. Wait 24–48 hours for the update to reflect on CAPS and admission processing.

The Change of Subjects window typically runs 30–45 days. Late changes are rejected — confirm and act immediately if you discover a mismatch.

Planning subject choice before registration

The checker is most valuable used before JAMB registration rather than after. Recommended sequence:

  1. Identify the course you want. Talk to actual practitioners about the work and career trajectory.
  2. Confirm your O\'Level subject combination matches. Your SSCE credits in the five course-relevant subjects are also required.
  3. List every Nigerian institution that offers the course. Browse the course directory.
  4. Run the subject combination checker against each target institution. A combination that works at one institution may not work at all your target institutions — choose the most flexible combination.
  5. Register JAMB with the confirmed combination. The combination is locked in at the moment of payment.

Why does the checker reject my combination at one institution but accept it at another?
Subject combinations vary by institution for the same course. JAMB does not enforce a single national combination per course — each institution sets its own requirement and lists it in the JAMB Brochure. The checker flags institution-specific mismatches.
Can I register more than four UTME subjects?
No. JAMB UTME is exactly four subjects — English Language (compulsory) plus three course-relevant subjects. Adding a fifth is not possible at registration.
What is the JAMB Change of Subjects fee?
Currently ₦2,500–₦4,000 depending on whether you change subjects, course, institution or a combination. Pay only through the official JAMB e-Facility portal via Remita.
How long does the Change of Subjects window stay open?
Typically 30–45 days. Specific dates vary by cycle and are announced by JAMB. Late changes are rejected — act immediately when you discover a mismatch.
Does the checker include polytechnic and college of education combinations?
Yes. The checker covers NUC universities, NBTE polytechnics and NCCE colleges of education. The combinations for technical and teacher-training courses may differ from university combinations for similar-named programmes.
My SSCE credits do not include one of the required subjects. Can I still apply?
No. Both UTME subjects and SSCE credits must match course requirements. If you lack the SSCE credit, you need to rewrite WAEC or NECO for the missing subject before applying. Or change to a course where your current SSCE credits qualify.
