💡 How it works: We compare your JAMB UTME score against every institution's published cutoff. If you pick a course, we use the departmental cutoff from our database. If you leave course blank, we use the institution's general benchmark.
Cut-off is the floor, not the target Clearing the cut-off lets you be considered. Competitive admission usually requires UTME at least 20 points above the published cut-off. Plan with a 20-point buffer, not exactly at the cut-off.

What the cut-off checker does

The JAMB cut-off mark checker takes your UTME score (or projected score, if you have not yet sat the exam) and returns the comprehensive list of NUC universities, NBTE polytechnics and NCCE colleges of education where you clear the institutional cut-off — plus, course by course, where you clear the departmental cut-off. Results are sortable by ownership (federal, state, private) and filterable by faculty.

The checker does what every admission-seeking Nigerian student attempts to do informally — looking up cut-offs one by one — but in seconds rather than hours, and across the entire indexed dataset rather than the handful of institutions a candidate happens to know about.

The three cut-off layers

The checker applies all three Nigerian cut-off layers:

  • JAMB national minimum: 140 for universities, 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education. The absolute floor below which no institution can admit a candidate without explicit JAMB approval.
  • Institutional cut-off: set by each institution above the JAMB minimum. Federal universities typically 180–230; state universities 160–200; polytechnics 120–170; private universities 140–180 (sometimes lower).
  • Departmental cut-off: set by each faculty or department above the institutional cut-off, course by course. Medicine and similarly competitive courses sit at the high end (250–280+); less competitive courses sit at or near the institutional cut-off.

The checker filters institutions where your UTME score clears the relevant layer for your target course. A 230 UTME score clears the institutional cut-off at most federal universities but may not clear the departmental cut-off for Medicine at any of them.

How to use the checker

  1. Enter your UTME score (out of 400).
  2. Optionally select a target course to filter results to courses you can actually apply for.
  3. Optionally select your state of origin for catchment-policy adjustment at federal universities.
  4. Filter by institution type (university, polytechnic, college of education) and ownership (federal, state, private) to narrow the result list.
  5. The checker returns: all institutions where you clear the relevant cut-off, sorted by competitiveness; for each, the specific courses you qualify for; and a recommended A-list, B-list, C-list grouping.

Interpreting the results

  • Clearing the cut-off ≠ admission. The checker tells you which institutions and courses will consider you. Final admission depends on aggregate score after Post-UTME — see the admission checker for probability scoring.
  • 20-point buffer rule. Realistic admission usually requires UTME at least 20 points above the published cut-off — not exactly at it. Treat cut-off as the absolute floor; the competitive band is 20+ points higher.
  • Recent cut-off drift. Cut-offs drift each cycle in response to JAMB performance distribution. The checker uses recent published cut-offs; expect the current cycle to vary 5–15 points from the published figure.
  • Catchment adjustments. If you indicate your state of origin and your target federal university operates a catchment quota for your state, the checker shows the catchment-eligible cut-off, which is typically 10–20 points below the merit cut-off.

Strategy for using cut-off data

Three patterns matter for using cut-off data effectively:

  • Build your A-list, B-list, C-list off this output. Distribute your four JAMB choices across stretch (A), realistic (B), and safe (C) institutions. A-list = institutions where your UTME comfortably clears the cut-off (20+ points); B-list = realistic; C-list = guaranteed clear.
  • Cross-reference with subject combination. Clearing the cut-off is meaningless if your subject combination doesn\'t match. Use the subject combination checker in parallel.
  • Check year-over-year stability. Some federal universities have stickier-upward cut-offs (UNILAG, UI, OAU); others vary more (state universities). The historical pattern matters for which institutions are likely to retain or change cut-offs in the current cycle.

What the checker cannot tell you

  • Cycle-specific cut-off changes. A cut-off increase from one cycle to the next changes the eligibility list. The checker uses recent published data; large mid-cycle changes are not reflected until announced.
  • Quota changes. A course quota reduction (or expansion) shifts competitive aggregate. The cut-off may not change but the realistic admission band can shift.
  • Catchment policy specifics. Some federal universities operate catchment policies with course-specific or quota-specific rules not visible in published cut-off data. The checker applies generic catchment adjustment.
  • Private university character filters. Some private universities apply additional character or interview filters beyond cut-off. The checker measures academic cut-off eligibility only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum JAMB score for university admission in Nigeria?
JAMB sets the national minimum at 140 for universities and 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education. Individual institutions set higher institutional cut-offs above this. For competitive courses (Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Engineering), the practical floor at federal universities is 250+.
Does clearing the cut-off guarantee admission?
No. The cut-off is the absolute floor — meeting it lets you be considered. Final admission goes to candidates ranked by aggregate (combining UTME, Post-UTME and sometimes O'Level) within each course's quota. Aggregate ranking decides admission.
How often are cut-offs updated in the checker?
Cut-off data is refreshed each admission cycle as institutions publish updated figures. Recent cycle data takes 2–6 weeks after publication to appear in the checker.
Are private university cut-offs lower than federal university cut-offs?
Generally yes. Private universities typically accept from 140 upwards (the JAMB national minimum), with most institutional cut-offs in the 140–180 range. Federal universities institutional cut-offs sit in the 180–230 range. Top federal universities (UNILAG, UI, OAU, ABU, UNN) have the highest cut-offs.
Can I be admitted with a UTME score below the cut-off?
No. The cut-off is the absolute floor. Applications below it are rejected at first review without exception. The only adjustment is the JAMB Change of Course window, where you can switch to a course or institution with a lower cut-off.
Does the checker include catchment policies?
Yes, when you enter your state of origin. Federal universities operating catchment quotas typically allow 10–20 points lower aggregate for catchment-eligible candidates. The checker flags this adjustment automatically.
