Borno State Polytechnic (BOPOLY) is a state-owned polytechnic located in Maiduguri, Borno State, in north-eastern Nigeria. The institution operates schools spanning engineering, applied sciences, business and management studies, environmental studies and general studies. The polytechnic serves the demand for technical and vocational education in Borno State and the broader North-East, complementing the federal University of Maiduguri, Kashim Ibrahim University and Federal Polytechnic Munguno. BOPOLY has been important in sustaining tertiary education access through the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency challenges.

History

Borno State Polytechnic was established by the Borno State Government as the state\'s flagship public polytechnic providing technical education access for Borno indigenes. The Maiduguri location, the Borno State capital and the largest city in north-eastern Nigeria, was selected for accessibility and infrastructure. The polytechnic admitted its first students with founding schools in engineering, applied sciences and business studies. The institution faced significant operational challenges through the peak years of the Boko Haram insurgency in the 2010s, with periodic security disruptions affecting academic activities. Despite these challenges BOPOLY has continued operations and remained a vital tertiary education option for Borno indigenes and IDPs.

Borno State Polytechnic operates from a campus in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The campus features academic schools complexes, engineering workshops and laboratories, the institution library, lecture theatres, hostels and administrative facilities. Maiduguri is the largest city in north-eastern Nigeria and the regional commercial centre. Road connectivity links Maiduguri to Damaturu (about 2 hours west), Bauchi (5 hours south-west) and Kano (8 hours west). Air access is via Maiduguri International Airport with daily flights to Abuja and Lagos. Security around the campus has improved substantially since the peak insurgency years.
