About Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori

Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic (KENPOLY), located in Bori, Rivers State, is a state-owned polytechnic in the Niger Delta region. The institution operates schools spanning engineering technology, applied sciences, business and management studies, environmental studies and general studies. KENPOLY is named in honour of Ken Saro-Wiwa (1941-1995), the Ogoni writer, environmental activist and human rights campaigner whose advocacy for the Ogoni people and against environmental degradation by oil multinationals made him an internationally recognised figure. The polytechnic serves the demand for technical education in Rivers State and the Niger Delta.

History

Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic was established by the Rivers State Government and named in honour of Ken Saro-Wiwa, the Ogoni writer and Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) leader who was executed by the Abacha military government in November 1995 — a death that drew international condemnation and led to Nigeria\'s suspension from the Commonwealth. The Bori location, in Khana Local Government Area, was selected as the heart of Ogoniland and a fitting site to honour Saro-Wiwa\'s legacy. The polytechnic admitted its first students with founding schools in engineering, applied sciences and business studies. The institution has built academic capacity for technical education in the Niger Delta context.

Campus & Infrastructure

Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic operates from a campus in Bori, in Khana Local Government Area, southern Rivers State, the heart of Ogoniland. The campus features academic schools complexes, engineering workshops, the institution library, lecture theatres, hostels and administrative facilities. Bori is connected by road to Port Harcourt (about 1.5 hours west) and Eleme (1 hour west). Air access is via Port Harcourt International Airport with daily flights to Lagos and Abuja and international flights to Accra.
