Federal Polytechnic Ekowe was established by the Federal Government as part of the third-generation expansion of federal polytechnic provision in the 2000s. The polytechnic admitted its first students with founding schools in engineering, applied sciences and business studies, configured to address Niger Delta development priorities. Federal Polytechnic Ekowe operates from a campus in Ekowe, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, southern Bayelsa State, in a riverine area characteristic of the Niger Delta. The campus features academic schools complexes, engineering workshops, the institution library, lecture theatres, hostels and administrative facilities. Ekowe is accessible by road and water from Yenagoa (about 2 hours by road or via the Bayelsa creek system). Air access is via Port Harcourt International Airport (about 4 hours by road) with daily flights to Lagos and Abuja.
