About Zamfara State University
Zamfara State University (ZSU), located in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State, is a state-owned university serving north-western Nigeria. The institution operates faculties in the arts, sciences, education, social sciences, management sciences and agriculture. ZSU serves as the principal state university for Zamfara State, providing tertiary education access for Zamfara indigenes alongside the federal Federal University Gusau which was established more recently. The institution focuses on programmes relevant to Zamfara\'s development priorities including agriculture, education and the social sciences, and operates with substantial state government investment despite the security challenges affecting the region.
History
Zamfara State University was established in 2013 by the Zamfara State Government under Governor Abdulaziz Yari, as the state\'s flagship public university. The Talata Mafara location was selected to provide tertiary education access to indigenes of southern Zamfara, away from Gusau the state capital where federal higher education would later be sited. ZSU admitted its first students in 2013 with founding faculties in arts, sciences, education and social sciences, configured to address gaps in tertiary education access for Zamfara State residents. Through the 2010s and 2020s the institution has expanded faculty offerings progressively, adding programmes in management sciences and agriculture. ZSU has been important in retaining academic talent in Zamfara amid the prolonged security challenges affecting the north-west.
