About Olabisi Onabanjo University

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) is the principal state-owned university of Ogun State, located in Ago-Iwoye. OOU operates 11 faculties spanning the arts, sciences, social sciences, education, engineering, environmental studies, agriculture, law, management sciences, basic medical sciences and clinical sciences. Total enrolment exceeds 40,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The institution has built strong reputation in Law, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture and the Arts, and operates the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) at Sagamu. OOU graduates enter top corporate organisations, federal and Ogun State civil service, legal practice and academia, and the institution is among the most competitive state universities for admission. OOU is named in honour of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State.

History

The institution was established in 1982 as the Ogun State University by Ogun State Edict, admitting its first students in 1983. The founding faculties were Arts, Sciences, Education and Social Sciences. Through the 1990s the institution expanded substantially, adding the Faculty of Law (1991), the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Management Sciences. In 2001, the institution was renamed Olabisi Onabanjo University in honour of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, the former Governor of Ogun State who had been instrumental in the institution's founding. The Faculty of Medicine was established and the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital was incorporated at Sagamu. OOU operates under the Ogun State Government with academic regulation by the National Universities Commission, and has consistently ranked among the top state universities in Nigerian admission demand.

Campus & Infrastructure

The Olabisi Onabanjo University main campus is at Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, approximately 30 km from Ijebu-Ode and 100 km from Lagos. The campus contains the Senate Building, the University Library, faculty complexes, residential halls and a sports complex. The Faculty of Engineering and several professional faculties operate from the main campus. The Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital is at Sagamu, approximately 60 km north on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Ago-Iwoye is connected to Lagos by road (about 2 hours south-west) and to Ibadan (about 2 hours north).
