History
The institution was established in 1980 as the Bendel State University by Bendel State Edict, under the leadership of Professor Ambrose Alli, who was then Governor. AAU admitted its first students in 1981 with the founding faculties of Arts, Sciences, Education and Social Sciences. Following the creation of Edo and Delta States from Bendel State in 1991, the institution was reorganised under the Edo State Government and renamed Edo State University. In 1999, the institution was further renamed Ambrose Alli University in honour of its founder. Through the 1990s and 2000s the institution expanded substantially, adding faculties in Law, Engineering, Agriculture, Pharmacy and Medicine. The Ambrose Alli University Teaching Hospital was developed at Irrua to provide clinical training. AAU has produced senior public officials, judges, academics and corporate leaders for Edo and Delta States, and the broader South-South region.
