History

Nnamdi Azikiwe University traces its origins to 1980 when Anambra State established the Anambra State University of Technology with campuses at Awka, Enugu and Abakaliki. In 1992 the federal government took over the Awka campus and reconstituted it as the federal Nnamdi Azikiwe University in honour of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria\'s first President (and a native of Anambra State). UNIZIK admitted its first independent students in 1992-1993. Through the 1990s and 2000s the institution expanded substantially, adding faculties in Engineering, Medicine, Law, Pharmacy and Management Sciences. The Faculty of Medicine and the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital were established in the 2000s. The institution adopted "Discipline, Self-Reliance and Excellence" as its motto and has consistently ranked among the top federal universities in Nigerian admission demand. UNIZIK is also known for its substantial part-time enrolment through the Centre for Distance and Continuing Education.

Reasonable choice for our daughter
★★★★☆

My daughter is in her second year. The communication from the school is good, fees are predictable and the campus is secure. We feel comfortable that she is in a serious academic environment.

Strong academics but accommodation is a real problem

The academic side is solid — but the hostel issue stresses me out every session. We fight for bedspace and many end up off-campus paying premium rents. The school knows this is a problem but progress...

Lecturers are mostly experienced — facilities need work

Three years in and I have no regrets about my choice. The lecturers in my faculty know their stuff and are mostly available when you need them. The challenge is infrastructure — the labs need updating...
