History

The University of Jos was established in 1971 as a campus of the University of Ibadan and was elevated to autonomous federal university status in 1975 by federal decree. The institution was conceived as part of the federal government's strategy to provide higher education access in the Middle Belt region. The first autonomous academic session began in 1975 with three founding faculties: Arts, Sciences and Education. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1978 and the Jos University Teaching Hospital was developed to provide clinical training. Through the 1980s and 1990s UNIJOS expanded considerably, adding the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Law. The institution played a central role in the development of theatre arts and film studies in Nigeria, with its Department of Theatre Arts producing numerous prominent Nigerian dramatists and filmmakers. UNIJOS has faced significant challenges related to security incidents in the Plateau State region but has maintained its academic operations throughout.
