History
Igbinedion University was established in 1999 by Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, as one of Nigeria\'s first three private universities (alongside Madonna and Babcock) and the first private secular university in the country. The Okada location, in northern Edo State, was selected for available land. IUO admitted its first students in 1999 with founding colleges in arts and social sciences, business and management studies, and natural and applied sciences. The institution rapidly expanded through the 2000s, becoming the first private university in Nigeria to receive MDCN approval for medical training in 2007. IUO added the College of Pharmacy, the College of Engineering and the College of Law in subsequent expansions, and developed the Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital to support clinical training.
