Overview
A secondary school teacher educates students aged 11-18 in specific subject areas, preparing them for SSCE/WAEC and JAMB examinations and developing their broader knowledge and life skills. Nigerian secondary school teachers typically hold B.Ed degrees with subject specialisation, or B.Sc/B.A degrees with PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma in Education), and must register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). Teachers work in federal unity schools, federal government colleges, state public schools, private schools (Day Waterman, Greensprings, Lekki British International, Atlantic Hall, Loyola Jesuit and thousands of others) and international schools.
Skills Required
Subject expertise, pedagogical skills, classroom management, student communication and motivation, assessment design, written and oral communication, patience and empathy, and continuous professional development.
Education Path
Most Secondary School Teacher roles require at least a Bachelor's degree in one of the related courses below, plus relevant work experience, internships and (often) professional certification. NYSC service helps build practical experience.
A Day in the Life
A typical day for a Nigerian secondary school teacher begins with morning assembly, taking class attendance, and beginning the first lesson around 8 AM. Throughout the day teachers deliver 5-7 lessons (40-45 minutes each) covering their subject specialisation, manage classroom behaviour, mark assignments and tests, provide individual support to struggling students, and supervise breaks and lunchtimes. Mid-day typically includes meetings with the head of department, parent communications, and lesson planning. Afternoons continue lessons, after-school activities supervision (clubs, sports, prep), continuous assessment marking, lesson preparation for upcoming weeks, and administrative tasks. Examination periods involve invigilation duties and intensive marking. Teachers in private schools often have additional duties around boarding house pastoral care, weekend activities and trip supervision.
