👥 HR Manager
HR managers oversee recruitment, performance, compensation, employee relations and organisational culture. The role has grown in strategic importance.
Overview
A human resources manager leads HR functions including talent acquisition, employee relations, performance management, compensation and benefits, training and development, HR policy, and organisational development. Nigerian HR managers work across all sectors — banking, oil and gas, telecommunications, FMCG, public sector, NGOs and consulting. The career combines business acumen, people skills, regulatory knowledge (Nigerian labour law, ITF, NSITF, PENCOM) and strategic HR thinking. Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) is the standard local qualification, with SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP increasingly common for international career mobility.
Skills Required
HR functional expertise across talent, compensation, performance, training and ER, Nigerian labour law knowledge, employee relations, communication and conflict resolution, business acumen, strategic thinking, and ethical practice.
Education Path
Most HR Manager roles require at least a Bachelor's degree in one of the related courses below, plus relevant work experience, internships and (often) professional certification. NYSC service helps build practical experience.
A Day in the Life
A typical day for a Nigerian HR manager begins with reviewing emails, addressing urgent employee matters (grievances, payroll issues, recruitment priorities), and team huddle with HR specialists. Mornings often involve recruitment activities — interviewing candidates, conducting orientations, reviewing job postings. Mid-day typically includes employee relations issues — addressing performance concerns, conducting disciplinary reviews, supporting line managers with HR matters. Afternoons continue policy work, compensation review activities, training programme management, talent management discussions, and reporting to senior management. Senior HR managers (CHROs) spend substantial time on executive team strategy, organisation design, change management and CEO/Board engagement.
